Class Description: This class is intended for absolute beginners, those who may have studied ballet as youngsters and wish to take it up again, and movers of other disciplines who are interested in studying the basics of ballet. Experience in any kind of dance, yoga or athletic activity would be advantageous, but is not a prerequisite. The class will focus on the details and precision of specific steps as well as the overarching principles of placement and movement patterns. Beginning each class at the barre before moving through center practice, we will build strength, stamina, and an understanding of the applications of ballet technique.
About the Instructor: An alumna of the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, Julia currently dances with Dandelion Dancetheater and Alyce Finwall Dance Theater. During her 19 years of ballet training, she studied with many teachers of diverse backgrounds and pedagogies, including those of the Royal Ballet School, the School of American Ballet, and the Vagonova School, as well as ballet from a modern dancer’s perspective. Through her teaching of ballet, Julia seeks to convey to students how the physical and intellectual study of technique can better inform and strengthen the body and mind—leaving the individual with more options for movement, thought, and expression.
