Your session
Equipment Pilates -- (Private and Semi-private sessions available) The Reformer, the Cadillac, and the Chair: these are the three main pieces of Pilates equipment developed by Joseph Pilates and refined by movement specialists over the years. Using an adaptable system exercises with spring tension, Pilates centers and strengthens the core and balances the body by addressing muscle tone, flexibility, and firing patterns. Programs are highly adaptable - Pilates can be both gentle enough for injury rehabilitation and challenging enough for athletic training.
Julia teaches at fully-equipped studios in San Francisco and Oakland with new, state-of-the-art Pilates equipment.
Mat Pilates -- (Group classes available) Taking the principles of core strength, alignment, and the development of a balanced body, but removing the equipment, Mat Pilates teaches the individual to move wholly from the core and create an integrated system to support the limbs and spine. Usually taught in a group format, Mat Pilates provides a challenging workout at a more affordable rate.
Small group mat classes are available at The Body Praxis in Oakland.
What to Expect
All sessions and classes are one hour in length - including arrival, your session with Julia, payment, and scheduling future sessions. If you like, you may schedule future sessions in advance and/or arrive a few minutes early to quietly settle in. For consideration of others, please make every effort to arrive on time.
If this is your first session or class with Julia, you will be asked to fill out a new client intake form and to sign a liability waiver. The first few minutes of a private or semi-private session will also include a quick discussion about your goals so that Julia can create a program that matches your body and needs. Remember - Pilates is about you! Whether this is your first or fiftieth Pilates session, bring your goals and curiosities with you to the studio, and you'll keep seeing how the workouts benefit you once you leave.
What to Wear Wear clothes that are comfortable to move in. You'll be laying down some of the time with arms and legs in the air, so make sure your clothes move with you. You'll be asked to remove your shoes at the door. Bare feet will provide you better grip for some of the exercises, but you can wear socks if that is more comfortable for you.
About Julia
"As a professional dancer and ITT certified Pilates instructor, I believe strongly in the rich benefits gained through the study of movement. Always a component of my dance training, Pilates became especially important to me as a tool to rehab from a major knee injury. I credit the Pilates methodologies to my ability to sustain a professional dancing career and am eager to share the benefits of Pilates with all curious bodies and minds. "

"I've tried Pilates a few times over the years with very little success. Working with Julia was awesome I felt like Pilates finally made sense to me. She was excellent about moving at a comfortable pace and I felt like I made a lot of progress over a very short period of time. Even after two sessions I felt myself using different muscles when I was walking!"

SOCIAL HOUR:
"I am a pre-professional dance student, and have been using Pilates for years to increase my strength and avoid injury. Julia has a very good eye and has been amazing at helping me find proper alignment with my scoliosis. As a dancer herself, she clearly understands the benefits of Pilates for dancers and can teach at a challenging athletic level."
